Getting Lucky

Mertens' Water Monitor

Mertens’ Water Monitor

As the great Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan likes to say, “The harder I work, the luckier I get”.

It’s a 6 hour drive from Broome to Bell Gorge, tucked away in the heart of the Kimberley, where I came across this little guy digging in the sand looking for his lunch. I must have spent about 30 minutes on my belly watching him and waiting patiently. Then suddenly, as I inched closer, he reared up on his hind legs to show me how scary he is. *Click. Click. Click*. Lucky timing, I guess.

What makes this even more special is that these little guys are endangered in the Northern Territory and increasingly under threat as the invasive cane toad marches west.

Good to photograph this one in fine form. And always nice to ‘get lucky’.
